The vineyards and the “Rosso di Montefalco”
Nothing but a painter, nothing but a wine. But what a painter and what a wine ! Montefalco, a tiny medieval town famed as the “Umbrian railings” for its location on a shy hilltop but dominating in a view the Umbrian Valley, is the most renowned production area of a king among wines: the Sagrantino di Montefalco, one of the 24 D.O.C.G. wines of this country, a dry and ruby-tinged wine, made out of a red, the Rosso di Montefalco.
A wine, a painter: Benozzo Gozzoli (1421-1497), of the Florentine School, who left one of his masterpieces in the Church of Saint Francis, a huge cycle of frescoes depicting the saint’s life.
